Always have a back-up

One of the key features at Europe’s largest Asian Wedding and Fashion event is the catwalk, so when you experience power issues on the day of the exhibition, it certainly gets you hot under the collar.

It was the first open day at the show last October at ExCeL London. An auditorium had been created to rival the leading fashion weeks. The show started and the audience was mesmerised by the glamorous outfits on display.

After around 20 minutes, the lights began to flicker resulting in the technical team frantically checking all the cables coming into the control desk. All of a sudden the music went off and the backstage monitors were all that could be heard.

The technicians managed to locate the problem to a power distribution unit at the back, which was swiftly removed and a back-up plugged in to ensure that the show continued.

Luckily, all this was done within a couple of minutes of the music stopping. The audience wasn’t affected much as the models kept on walking.

The biggest lesson learnt from this incident was to ensure that back-up technical equipment is always very important.

We were very lucky on this occasion that a back-up power distribution was carried to the show. We have now put systems in place to ensure that all of the key components are identified and doubled up to ensure that if there is ever another technical issue, it can be easily resolved with minimum disruption.
