The NEC has hailed a £3m initiative to ease congestion on the motorway serving the venue as “fantastic”. The Highways Agency “through-junction running” scheme allows motorists travelling south on the M42 to drive on to the hard shoulder at junction five on the M42 near Solihull. This is the first time that drivers have used a hard shoulder between slip roads and gives them a continuous four lane section of motorway from J6 southbound.More than 2.1m people visit the NEC each year with approximately 80 per cent travelling by car. MD of the NEC, Kathryn James, says: “This is a fantastic initiative from the Highways Agency and the increased capacity will undoubtedly make it even easier for visitors leaving the NEC. “With the popularity of events growing and visitor numbers increasing year on year to our site we must ensure our facilities, and those around it, develop at the same pace, so we can continue to deliver the total experience,” James adds.
