AEG details its O2 event space and hotel plans

02’s management company Anschutz Entertainment Group Europe (AEG) has announced details of its hotel and event space plans for London’s 02.Our sister publication Conference News reported before Christmas that the group was in the process of finalising plans for another large events centre for London Eastside. The news followed Excel London’s own new-build which has laid claim to be London’s first International Convention Centre. The AEG proposals include a four-star, 450-bed hotel; adjoining serviced apartments; and the new event space, which will include banqueting space for up to 3,000 people next to the main O2 Arena. The site already has outline consent.  David Campbell, CEO of AEG Europe, says: “The O2 has already created more than 2,500 direct jobs in Greenwich. However the real economic prize for Greenwich and East London is adding overnight visitors. AEG executive director for real estate and development, Alistair Wood, adds: “There remains a significant lack of hotel space in this area, and a high quality hotel built alongside the venue will be welcomed by the more than 7.5 million annual visitors to The O2. We also see strong demand from the surrounding area including: the soon to be Royal Borough of Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Excel, City Airport and new regeneration in this part of the Thames Gateway.”Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands is the architect for the scheme and AEG is working with a shortlist of potential operators for the hotel.
