Child's play at Harrogate

The Yorkshire Event Centre plays host to a new toy fair this month, capitalising on what organisers call a “real boom in collecting”. The fair will feature 350 stalls full of collectables from Star Wars and Dr Who action figures to model railways, teddy bears, dolls, Dinky toys and more. “People love nostalgia and most of the visitors to our fairs are not kids, but grown adults who want to bring back a few happy memories or to build up a small collection,” says organiser Barry Potter. “There has been a real rise in people collecting lately.” This recent boom has seen some older toys become valuable heirlooms in their own right. “It’s always great when a collectable becomes much more valuable, but my advice would be to buy whatever interests you personally,” adds Potter. “Then no matter whether it goes up in price or not, you’re always happy with it.” The Harrogate Toy Fair opens on Sunday 17 January.
