Clarion cancels Garden Expo

Clarion Events, organiser of the inaugural Garden Expo 2010, has cancelled its launch 87 days before it was due to be held citing a lack of industry interest. Clarion says that although there was wide-spread industry support, “sadly the support was not strong enough to sustain the launch, and the difficult decision has been made to cancel the event”.The exhibition was due to be held at Stoneleigh Park 29 – 30 June 2010 and was to run in conjunction with the Horticultural Trades Association's National Plant Show. The latter remains unaffected. Clarion hoped for over 200 exhibitors at its show, however, 141 exhibitors had been booked between the two shows. “It is with regret that Clarion Events have taken this decision,” says MD of Clarion Retail Andy Baxter. “I am very proud of the work the team have done in securing the support of some of the industry’s leading businesses, however we believe to continue any further would not serve the best interests of these customers and the market in general.”The garden exhibition sector has been hard hit recently. The Edible Garden Show, which was run by a consortium of investors including Brian Wiseman and Paul Smith of PR agency Paul Smith Associates, was postponed until 2011 earlier this year. Last week Marwood Events, organiser of the inaugural Hard Landscaping show, announced a footfall of 856 at the Ricoh Arena after predicting at least 1,000 visitors.
