Freedom Festival earns a slot in Hull's event calendar

Hull's Freedom festival will become an annual event after generating £9.3m for the region's economy.One hundred and fifty thousand people including celebrities such as Britain's Got Talent contestants Stavros Flately (pictured) attended the live music and arts festival in the city centre, which was timed to run alongside the start of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race last September.According to an independent evaluation by the Moffat Centre for Travel and Tourism Business Development, average spend per person per day on transport, food, drink, attractions and shopping was £42 and 99.5 per cent of those surveyed said they would return to Freedom.The event was funded by Hull City Council, Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, Welcome to Yorkshire and Yorkshire Forward. The chief executive of Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, Janet Reuben, says: “The Freedom and Clipper weekend has shown the enormous capacity this city has to host world-class festivals.”An additional event will be organised for the return of the Clipper yachts on 17 July 2010.
