ISO event standard for 2012
05-Jan-10by Annie Byrne
World standardisation organisation the ISO is to develop a special ISO designed to promote the sustainable management of events and conferences. The standard will be produced by a new ISO project committee, ISO/PC 250, Sustainability in event management. Thirty countries have expressed interest in getting involved as initial participants or observers. The standard, ISO 20121, the committee hopes, will be finalised to coincide with the London Olympics in 2012. Chair of ISO/PC 250, Fiona Pelham, says the ISO would provide a framework which planners, venues and other members of the event supply chain can use “to implement, maintain and improve sustainability within their work”. ISO 20121 will require identification of key sustainability issues like venue selection, operating procedures, supply chain management, procurement, communications and transport. Pelham believes the new ISO standard “will make a great difference to the event industry”. Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Meeting Professionals International, Elizabeth Henderson, says extensive stakeholder engagement will mean ISO 20121 can provide the industry with “one internationally recognised framework to implement sustainability”. The first meeting of the new committee is scheduled 18-21 January 2010.
