Madame Tussauds tweetup biggest yet

Organiser of the first events industry tweetup for 2010, Merlin Entertainment, has deemed this week’s event "the biggest yet". Over 150 guests attended the tweetup at the London venue.  This latest in a series of industry tweetups attracted social media experts from the corporate sector, including JP Morgan Cazenove, Ernst and Young, Wellcome and Credit Suisse. They mingled with event suppliers, marketing agencies, organisers and venue representatives. Unlike previous tweetups, it included a number of event professionals who are not yet using social media but who were keen to learn.  Head of marketing for events at Merlin, Peter Kerwood, says that by incorporating social media into events the “conference, exhibition, party, becomes just part of a much longer journey for delegates that starts before the event and lasts long afterwards”.  A presentation illustrated why everyone in the industry should care about social media. Key reasons included the fact that Facebook is on target to achieve half a billion users by the end of 2010, Twitter is looking to have one billion users by the end of 2012 and that social media has become the most influential source in helping consumers make purchasing decisions.
