More than 50,000 visitors are expected to attend inaugural family event, Sports Show, at the NEC next year, founded by rugby legends Will Greenwood and Austin Healey. Held on 25-26 June 2016, the event will take place six weeks ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics where visitors will have more than 30 sports and activities available to try, with masterclasses and coaching with some of the country’s sporting heroes. Will Greenwood said: “I have played sport for as long as I can remember and grew up with rugby all around me, but I have always been keen to try my hand at anything and that is what we want to offer all the kids and parents coming to the Sports Show.” The show has secured the participation of 13 National Governing Bodies, the support of Sport England and some of Britain’s athletes including Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, ballerina Darcey Bussell and Olympic and Paralympic medallists Beth Tweddle, Anthony Ogogo and Jonnie Peacock. The NEC announced earlier in September that it had taken a 25 per cent stake in the inaugural event, the first time in its history that the Birmingham venue has financially invested in an event where the venue team will play the role of joint organiser as well as host.
