Third Heathrow runway gets MPs backing
07-Dec-09by Annie Byrne
Ministers have backed the Government’s plan for a third runway at Heathrow, but argue that it must be supported by high-speed rail links. A report by the cross-party Commons Transport Select Committee says direct access from the national rail network to Heathrow is essential to maximise the economic benefits of a third runway and prevent it from losing out to better connected airports in Europe. However, ministers rejected a proposed second runway at Stanstead, saying “we are not convinced that a national case for an additional runway at Stanstead has been made”. The committee advised the Government to consider locating it at Gatwick instead.
