Virgin pimps shared taxis

Virgin Atlantic has launched a global initiative aimed to help passengers find others travelling in the same direction to share taxis at arrival.     As part of its VJAM programme, which is an open innovation initiative with the UK’s National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, the Taxi² website (www.taxi.to), will match passengers, who are on the same flight or arrive at a similar time, so they can meet for a journey to a similar direction. The airline says it will both save passengers money and cut ground emissions.   Passengers log in with their journey details and when matched, are sent the details of the other passenger and can then decide where to meet. They can also print a sign from the website to easily find each other. The system will also match females, who want female travelling companions. “We are always looking at ways to help improve our passengers’ journeys and this is a simple initiative which helps them to connect in a clever way,” says director of product and service for Virgin Atlantic, Dee Cooper. “We expect this scheme to be popular with our passengers.”
